Service Activities for Families: Second Grade

In second grade your child is learning that God gave the gift of Jesus, his Son, as his most precious gift. Jesus was sent to show us God's love and in turn we promise to show that love to others.

These family activities will help your child learn to show love by helping others.

1. October is the month for missions. Explain to your child the importance of missionaries as they feed and clothe the poor, give aid to the sick and spread the Good News of God's love. During the month of October encourage family members to set a little of their spending money aside. At the end of the month, help your child send that money to a missionary organization such as Maryknoll. Praise your whole family for their efforts.
2. Thanksgiving is a special time for families. For Thanksgiving, let your child make a Thanksgiving Turkey Tail from paper feathers made for each family member or guest. Cut out a feather for each person using colorful paper. Help your child write the name of each family member or guest on a feather and then one reason that person is appreciated. Arrange the feathers on the table in the shape of a turkey tail. Before dinner, have each person at the table read the feather message. This activity could develop into a Thanksgiving prayer for grace.
